Through the years, Tuklas has continued to give back to the local creative community by providing residencies, personalized mentorship, and culminating exhibitions to promising young talent. Founded by Alfredo Esquillo and resident curator Renato Habulan, Tuklas has now become a powerful launchpad, propelling young artists into their first-ever solo exhibitions to mark the beginning of their flourishing artistic practice. Initially inspired by Esquillo’s own mentorship under Habulan, this creative support initiative continues to help foster guidance to emerging young blood, especially now, when a significant rise of self-taught artists exists, perhaps due to the democraticizing influence of digital platforms and the intersection of fine art and mainstream media. In an era of artists raised and influenced by the internet, Tuklas aims to help ground its mentees in the roots of academic practice and work ethic while guiding them towards their distinctive voice without compromise.
This exhibition shows the works of this year’s batch of nominees, setting the stage for a new wave of artists who are set to redefine the future of the local art scene, one step at a time.
